Our Vintage Wedding Looks

One of the most special parts of running The Vintage Individual is that the pieces found along the way often come with real stories attached. For their wedding, that story became personal. Makena and Colin both found their ceremony looks while curating collections for the shop.

Makena found her gown about a year before she and Colin were even engaged. It was a 1950s dress in perfect condition, and she knew immediately it was the one. She never tried on another dress. Makena had it altered to tea length, while keeping the original shape and detailing. One of the most meaningful elements was the rosette work, which reminded her of the rosettes on her maternal grandmother’s gown from the same decade. It felt like a rare vintage find with an unexpected personal connection. To bring the dress fully back to life, Makena worked with Farsea Couture, a NYC studio specializing in couture and high end vintage garments. They revived the silk with careful steaming, refreshed the details, and executed the alterations with the level of craftsmanship the piece deserved.

Wedding dresses today can be extremely expensive, and Makena’s experience is a reminder that vintage can be a strong alternative when there is enough time to source thoughtfully and the right seamstress to tailor it properly. With expert alterations, a vintage gown can deliver a true couture feel for less, while also being completely one of a kind. While The Vintage Individual does not currently offer a dedicated selection of vintage gowns on the site, Makena and Colin are always open to helping customers find something special. If someone is looking for a vintage wedding look, they can reach out and The Vintage Individual can keep an eye out during sourcing trips to help find a one off piece.

Colin’s ceremony look came from a similar place. While sourcing for a 2024 collection, Makena and Colin found him a custom olive silk blend suit with beautiful fabric and strong construction. It needed only minor tailoring, which was handled by a local tailor, resulting in a fit that felt personal and elevated. For anyone considering wearing a suit for their wedding, vintage can be an especially good option. Full suit sets are often found in standout fabrics with custom level construction, and many pieces can be easily altered for a unique, bespoke look.

For Makena and Colin, wearing vintage felt like the most natural extension of The Vintage Individual. Pieces with history, tailored with care, and styled in a way that still feels current.
